A Day on the Hot Tuna |
To the charter party, a day on the Hot Tuna typically begins with the search for the hot tuna bite, but for the Captain and Crew the trip begins the night before. They determine the direction to head by examining satellite imaging in order to gauge where the temperature breaks in the Northeast canyons exist. This information is then compared with recent fishing experiences of the Hot Tuna and other local captains.

Normally, the Hot Tuna will leave dock in the dark, giving those aboard the opportunity to see, in several hours time, a beautiful sunrise in the Eastern sky. As the approach is made to the temperature break in the ocean, tackle is prepared and final instructions are given on how to land the targeted fish. |
Shortly after the lines are in, there is a boil, a splash, and the best words of all being shouted: “HOOK UP!” The rod doubles over and the reel screams as line pours off it following the sounding fish. It is clear that this is a tuna. As several more rods double over with screaming reels, we know that once again we have found the hot tuna bite. |
